Iron-on patch depicting Flaco the Eurasian Eagle-Owl with keepsake glossy postcard. Flaco’s year of freedom in New York City captivated countless people around the world.
The design of the patch is based on the photo printed on the postcard that was taken by David Lei in Central Park in May 2023. The patches are made in the USA by our talented partners. Each embroidered patch measures approximately 2.5x3 inches and includes over 15,000 stitches. We think these detailed patches are perfect for baseball caps, sweatshirts, backpacks, and tote bags.
100% of the purchase price paid for each of the initial 50 patches or $1,500 was donated to the NYC Plover Project in Flaco's memory. Going forward, we will donate 10% of the purchase price for each patch to bird-related nonprofits on an ongoing basis (monthly or quarterly). At the end of the year, we'll review our costs and give more if we can. We hope this little project can provide a sustainable way for us to support organizations that protect birds.
Instructions:
- Remove the patch from the card. Discard the adhesive glue dot that attached the patch to the card.
- Set your iron to the highest heat setting that will not damage the material of the item you have selected.
- Use the iron to pre-heat the material in the area you wish to apply the patch.
- Place the patch on the pre-heated area in the desired position. Double-check position before proceeding.
- Cover the patch with a thin cloth or parchment paper and then apply the iron firmly. Keep the iron in motion while maintaining constant pressure.
- Periodically check the patch and stop ironing once it is sufficiently adhered at the edges. The ironing may take 60 seconds or more.
- For permanence, sew down the edges of the patch with like-colored thread as needed. Your local dry cleaner or clothing alterations shop may be able to help.
Tips:
- Carefully plan and double-check the position of the patch before you begin to iron it down.
- If the patch eventually begins to peel, apply fabric glue or sew it on for better permanence.
FAQ:
-
Could you please attach the patch to an item for me? Sorry, we are not current equipped to do that but you can see if your local dry cleaner or alterations shop is able to help.
-
Can I iron the patch onto this specific baseball cap, sweatshirt, backpack, or tote bag? If the material of the item you have selected can be ironed, yes. Be sure the item is not made of plastic or is waxed or otherwise sensitive to high heat. If in doubt, we recommend using a fabric glue and / or sewing the patch on instead ironing.
-
How do I iron the patch onto an awkward, curved surface like the front of a baseball cap? We recommend sewing the patch onto a baseball cap or at least sewing down the corners before ironing it on. One technique that may also help is to use a good, thick oven mitt to hold the cap in your hand, with your fingers pressing behind the area where you plan to iron on the patch. This might be easier than trying to position the cap on an ironing board.
-
Can I pick my order up from you locally? Sorry, we cannot accommodate local pickups and all orders will be shipped.
- Which organizations will receive your donations? We plan to support some of our favorite local bird-related charities and will provide updates on this page.
